Course Requirements

I. Language Courses

Completion of the Chinese or Japanese language sequence, at least two of which must be upper-division. Students who wish to complete the East Asian studies program should enroll in beginning Chinese or Japanese no later than the sophomore year. Students with prior knowledge of Chinese or Japanese language may opt to take a placement exam in hopes of satisfying the elementary language course requirements (1-6).

II. Core Course

One core course: History 40A Early Modern East Asia or HIS 40B, The Making of Modern East Asia.

III. Electives

Three additional upper-division courses from the East Asian studies curriculum, one of which may be an individual study (course 199).
