East Asian Studies Minor Requirements

The East Asian studies minor requires a minimum of six courses, five of which must be upper-division (minimum of 25 upper-division credits). Additional lower-division coursework in Chinese or Japanese language may be need in order to gain the proficiency necessary to enroll in the upper-division Chinese or Japanese language courses required for this minor (see below).

Lower-Division Language Courses

All East Asian studies minors are expected to gain proficiency in Chinese or Japanese language. Students without prior knowledge of Chinese or Japanese should enroll in Chinese (CHIN 1) or Japanese (JAPN 1) no later than fall quarter of their second year:

First-Year Chinese or Japanese
Fall Quarter: CHIN 1, First-Year Chinese or JAPN 1, First-Year Japanese
Winter Quarter: CHIN 2, First-Year Chinese or JAPN 2, First-Year Japanese
Spring Quarter: CHIN 3, First-Year Chinese or JAPN 3, First-Year Japanese

Second-Year Chinese or Japanese
Fall Quarter: CHIN 4, Second-Year Chinese or JAPN 4, Second-Year Japanese
Winter Quarter: CHIN 5, Second-Year Chinese or JAPN 5, Second-Year Japanese
Spring Quarter: CHIN 6, Second-Year Chinese or JAPN 6, Second-Year Japanese

Students with prior knowledge of Chinese or Japanese may place out of part or all of the lower-division Chinese or Japanese language series. Students with prior knowledge of Chinese or Japanese language are required to complete a language placement to determine which course of Chinese or Japanese language instruction best suits their skill level.

Upper-Division Language Requirement (2 courses)

All East Asian studies minors are required to complete a minimum of two upper-division Chinese or Japanese language courses. Prerequisite(s): CHIN/JAPN 6 or higher. Consult each course's UCSC General Catalog description for specific prerequisite information.
